Background of the Study
Digital learning has emerged as an essential tool in modern education, offering flexibility, accessibility, and the potential for individualized learning experiences (Suleiman & Adeola, 2023). In nursing education, digital learning platforms provide nursing students with opportunities to engage with interactive learning materials, virtual simulations, and online resources, helping them to enhance their clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills (Ajayi & Sambo, 2024). The adoption of digital learning in nursing education is seen as a strategic response to the increasing demand for healthcare professionals in a fast-paced, technology-driven world (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).
At the University of Ilorin College of Nursing, digital learning has been incorporated into the nursing curriculum as a way to complement traditional face-to-face instruction. However, the implementation of digital learning in nursing education is not without challenges. These challenges include limited access to digital tools and resources, inadequate infrastructure, resistance to change among faculty and students, and the need for appropriate digital literacy (Abubakar & Aliyu, 2024). Moreover, while digital learning can offer significant educational benefits, its effectiveness largely depends on overcoming these barriers and ensuring that both faculty and students are adequately prepared for its use (Michele & Olamide, 2023).
This study aims to examine the challenges faced by nursing educators and students in implementing digital learning in nursing education at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing. Understanding these challenges will provide insights into how digital learning can be better integrated into nursing curricula to improve learning outcomes and address barriers to its successful implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of digital learning in nursing education, the challenges that hinder its effective implementation at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing remain underexplored. Barriers such as inadequate digital infrastructure, insufficient training, and resistance to adopting new technologies have the potential to undermine the full potential of digital learning in nursing education. Therefore, this study aims to identify the specific challenges faced by students and faculty members in using digital platforms for nursing education and recommend strategies for overcoming these obstacles.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges faced in implementing digital learning in nursing education at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing.
2. To assess the impact of digital infrastructure and resources on the effectiveness of digital learning.
3. To propose recommendations for overcoming challenges and improving the integration of digital learning in nursing education.
Research Questions
1. What are the challenges faced by faculty and students in implementing digital learning in nursing education at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing?
2. How does the digital infrastructure at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing affect the success of digital learning in nursing education?
3. What strategies can be proposed to overcome the challenges of implementing digital learning in nursing education?
Research Hypotheses
1. The implementation of digital learning in nursing education at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing is hindered by insufficient digital infrastructure and resources.
2. There is a significant relationship between the digital literacy of faculty members and the successful implementation of digital learning in nursing education.
3. Overcoming the challenges of digital learning will improve students' learning outcomes in nursing education.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students and faculty members at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing and explore the challenges related to digital learning in the institution. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the variability of technological access among different participants.
